Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Contact lens prescriptions differ from glasses prescriptions — they include base curve, diameter, and the corrective power adjusted for sitting on the eye instead of in front of it. A contact lens fitting determines those parameters. Bring your current glasses prescription if you have one, but plan for a separate contact lens fitting.

Standard fittings take about an hour for the first visit, plus a follow-up to confirm fit and comfort. Specialty fittings (scleral, custom-fit) take longer and span 2–3 visits. We’ll explain the schedule before you start.

OHIP covers eye exams for ages 0–19 and 65+ (with some medical exceptions for adults 20–64). Contact lens fittings themselves are usually a separate service not covered by OHIP, but most private vision insurance plans cover them. We’ll check your benefits before booking.

Standard lenses (daily disposables, monthly toric, multifocal) are for routine wear and ordinary prescriptions. Specialty lenses (scleral, custom-fit, post-surgical) are for irregular corneas, severe dry eye, post-surgical fittings, or prescriptions that off-the-shelf lenses can’t correct. The fitting process and follow-up depth differ.

Almost always yes. Contact lenses are appropriate from middle childhood (with parental supervision and discipline around hygiene) through old age. Age alone doesn’t disqualify you. What matters is your eye health, prescription, and willingness to follow the wear and replacement schedule. A contact lens consultation will determine candidacy.
