Referring Doctors

Optometric care. Specialist coordination.

We see your referred patients across two GTA clinics — children, adult OHIP-eligible patients, and diabetics for annual screening. When findings exceed optometric scope, we coordinate the handoff to specialist ophthalmologists at Uptown Eye Specialists. Routine care, communicated back.

Who Refers to Us

Three primary referral partners.

Most of our referrals come from primary care. Our role is the routine optometric care your patients need, with respect for the relationship you’ve built and clear communication back.

Family Doctors & GPs

Annual eye exams (OHIP-covered for children to age 19 and adults 65+), vision concerns identified during well visits, diabetic eye screening for diabetic patients (OHIP-covered annually).

Paediatricians

First comprehensive eye exam at 6–9 months (Canadian Association of Optometrists guideline), school-readiness vision checks, post-screening follow-up when school screening flags an issue, suspected amblyopia or strabismus, paediatric myopia management.

Endocrinologists

Annual diabetic eye examinations (OHIP-covered for patients with diagnosed diabetes), monitoring for diabetic retinopathy, coordination back to your office for systemic management. Findings beyond optometric scope route to retina specialists at Uptown Eye Specialists.

Service Scope

What we handle in-house.

We’re optometry-led. Routine examination, prescription, and ocular health screening are core services. Anything that needs medical or surgical management gets coordinated with our UVG specialist partners — your patient stays inside the network.

Paediatric Eye Exams

First exam at 6 months, school-readiness, ongoing annual exams. Detection of amblyopia, strabismus, refractive error, paediatric myopia. OHIP-covered to age 19. Learn more

Diabetic Eye Screening

Annual dilated exam for diabetic patients, OCT imaging, retinal photography for documentation. Findings indicating diabetic retinopathy route to retina specialists at UES. Learn more

Adult Comprehensive Exams

Refraction, ocular health screening, IOP measurement, anterior and posterior segment evaluation. Suspected glaucoma, retinal disease, or significant pathology routes to specialist evaluation. Learn more

Specialty Optometry

Myopia management for progressing children, specialty contact lens fitting for irregular corneas, low vision assessment, prescription eyewear and dispensing.

Referral Channels

Three ways to send us a patient.

We accept referrals through whichever channel fits your office workflow. We respond promptly during clinic hours and confirm receipt before the patient calls.

Phone

Call (416) 292-0336 during clinic hours. Tell us the patient’s name, reason for referral, and any urgency. We’ll book and confirm the appointment.

Email

Send referral details to info@uoptical.ca. Include patient name, date of birth, reason for referral, and any relevant clinical history. Avoid identifiable patient data in unsecured email — phone or fax preferred for full referral letters.

Fax

For complete referral letters with clinical history, fax to (416) 292-0331. We acknowledge by phone when received.

Patients always return to your office.

We send a written summary of our findings after every exam, including any onward referral to UVG specialists.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. OHIP covers comprehensive eye exams for all children to age 19 (annual), all adults 65+ (annual), and adults 20-64 with documented qualifying conditions including diabetes, glaucoma, retinal disease, AMD, and certain medication-related risks. Patients bring their health card; no copay, no qualifying paperwork from your office required.

Routine paediatric and adult exam referrals are typically scheduled within 1-3 weeks. Diabetic patients due for annual screening are scheduled at your office’s convenience. Urgent referrals (suspected acute pathology, sudden vision loss, paediatric symptoms requiring rapid follow-up) are accommodated same-day or next-day where clinically warranted — please flag urgency in your referral.

Yes. We send a written exam summary back to your office for every referred patient — refraction, ocular health findings, any follow-up plan, and any onward referral to UVG specialists if findings exceeded optometric scope. Reports go by your preferred channel (fax, email, or secure portal as available).

We coordinate the handoff to specialist ophthalmologists at Uptown Eye Specialists (UES) — fellowship-trained in glaucoma, retina, cornea, oculoplastic, and paediatric ophthalmology. The patient stays within the U Vision Group network for continuity of care. We send the referral and copy you on the report so your record stays current.

Yes. Specialty contact lens fittings (scleral, custom-fit, post-surgical, irregular cornea) are one of our optometric service lines. Patients are referred either by other optometrists who don’t fit complex cases or directly from primary care. Our optometrists handle the fitting; for cases involving keratoconus or post-surgical corneas, we coordinate with the cornea team at Uptown Eye Specialists.
